Lynda Sherman
Master Printer and owner of Bremelo Press
"Handset type is based on an interlocking Fibonacci number series which relates directly to the Golden ratio and is pleasing to the eye."
About Bremelo Press
Letterpress printer and artist Lynda Sherman has been the proprietor of Bremelo Press in Seattle, Washington since 2000. After an apprenticeship with the legendary printer, Dikko Faust in New York City, Lynda returned to Seattle and for over 10 years has worked under the imprint Bremelo Press.
Bremelo Press is a letterpress print shop that produces stationery and other printed items for personal and business use, including: wedding and party invitations, menus, programs, announcements, business cards, business signs and more.
A Sustainable Approach
Each piece that Bremelo Press creates is unique and tailored to the client's own style. These high quality items are created using original letterpress technology: a Chandler & Price Clamshell Press using handset wood and metal type printed on archival papers.
Unlike other type methods which use harsh chemicals and produce waste, Bremelo's traditional aproach is sustainable and re-uses type, which reduces the impact on the environment. This means you can look good in print while being good to the planet.
The Bremelo Press Process
The process works like this: Lynda will draw out a "raw sketch." This is the skeleton of the project. It will then be typeset by hand, may be tweaked during press check, and after "sign off", printed on the vintage presses: a 104 year old Chandler & Price and a Vandercook proof press from the late 1960’s.
The small, bright, first floor studio, is filled with paper, including 100% cotton paper from the oldest mill in Italy, hanging from the walls. There are cabinet cases full of metal type: English serifs, French italics and American wood type from Hamilton Type in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
"By working in this medium," Lynda stated, "I maintain a sense of place and safeguard future access to what is special and original."
